ABOUT The PHILOSOPHY

Born from a goal of affecting the greatest change for the most athletes, RowHow 360 aims to provide training and resources to empower athletes, coaches, and teams to create the best possible experience for every member of our community.

I have had the opportunity to see a lot of great things happen throughout my experiences in this sport. And from it all I have learned that the distinguishing characteristic between those who set out with a great plan and those who actually achieve something great is the 'how' behind the 'what'. It is how we build relationships, how we share information, how we prioritize our energies, how we bring others along with us. So I began RowHow 360 to address this need and improve the experience throughout all levels of our sport.

As a coach, I am driven by a passion for how rowing can shape people and endeavor to see as many people as possible benefit from their rowing experience. There are four key principles that guide my approach to coaching:

1. Everyone is deserving of the opportunity to improve.

2. Context matters before content.

3. It has to be intentional to be helpful.

4. At the end of the day, it's about enjoying what we do.

As a consultant, my purpose is to support the goals and plans of my clients by  providing informed recommendations on how they can communicate, collaborate, and educate themselves and their teams. I draw from sport-specific knowledge and a background in education to give new perspectives that create sustainable changes for a wide spectrum of athletes, coaches, and teams.

I look forward to hearing from you and improving your rowing experience.

ABOUT ME

Helen Tilghman

Founder, RowHow 360

Head Coach, Mt. Baker Crew

M.Ed. Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership

I entered the rowing world in 2003 at Mt. Baker Rowing and Sailing Center in Seattle, WA. This quickly became and has continued to be my second home. I was fortunate to learn from exceptionally knowledgeable and caring coaches who passed on a deep love of the sport. My time on Lake Washington continued when I attended the University of Washington. The four years I spent as a Husky oarswoman were some of my most challenging, rewarding, enjoyable, and formative times.

It was during these years that I realized I wanted to pursue a career in coaching. That goal has taken me through a graduate degree in education and across the country, with several stops including Seattle University, Craftsbury Sculling Center, University of Dayton, and Michigan State University, before returning home to Mt. Baker. I have served as the Varsity Women's head coach at Mt. Baker since 2016 and served as the first Director of Rowing from 2017-2020.

Outside of the regular season, I work with several USRowing camps and continue to coach at Craftsbury Sculling Center. In 2019, I joined the inaugural USRowing Olympic Development Program camps as the head coach of the Northwest women's team. I also coached the Northwest women at the Youth Regional Challenge  in 2018 and 2019.

My goals for the future are to earn a Ph.D. in Education and continue developing coaching education resources. When I need to take a break from these pursuits, I  enjoy spending time with friends in the great PNW outdoors, experimenting in the kitchen, and playing with my dog Finn.
